Can I pick up the pallets of sod myself?
Unfortunately, no, because we don't have a storefront. However, we guarantee that delivery will be a snap for you! Also, if you’re looking to pay less for your order, here’s a great tip: call a neighbour and order together!
When is the best time to install sod?
Sod rolls can be successfully installed in spring, summer, and fall. But since it's wetter and the temperatures are cooler in the spring and fall, it's easier to install then! YAY!
Important note: Don't flood your land before installing your sod because doing so will compact the soil, and roots will have trouble penetrating it and taking root.
But once the rolls are installed... go ahead and water that gorgeous sod!
Don’t skimp on water! Your grass will thank you for it!
Should I seed or lay sod?
TEAM PEAT!
For what? Well here's why!
Peat, you can install this at any time of the season, spring, summer & fall!
When you choose peat, well, you can enjoy it quickly! As soon as it is implemented, you can walk a little bit on it and in 3 weeks, you can jump, do the cartwheel and even do a sprint! YAY!
When you are TEAM GRAINES, you will only be able to enjoy it in several months. Ideally, we wait a year for the seedlings to be anchored enough to start enjoying our lawn normally. Worse, we agree that the result will never match that of the peat ein... in addition to that there is a good chance that it will not grow well and not uniformly (seriously, disaster guaranteed). It's best to leave that to the turf PROducers!
By choosing OUR peat, we guarantee that the seeds we use are of high quality. Promised, swore, spat!
How do I prepare my property?
Make sure your grounds are ready before your new sod is delivered and lay the rolls ASAP!
Get cracking! Go, go, GO!
Check out our successful installation and set-up and professional maintenance tips! These tips will help you prepare your little piece of paradise. If you already have straggly old grass on your property, you’ll need to rip that stuff out! You’ll need to work the soil several inches deep, especially if the earth is compacted, before adding a good thick layer of topsoil; the same applies approach applies if your soil is of poor quality. To be on the safe side, apply some high-octane fertilizer like our Steroid fertilizer to encourage rooting. Next, it’s time to lay your new sod.
Note: Check the guide for our “COWBOY” tips ;)
When should I lay the rolls of sod?
Sod rolls are alive, which means that if you don't lay your grass as soon as you receive it and water it as soon as it is laid, your grass will turn yellow and DIE! So be sure to lay those right quick and break out the watering can!
Should I water the sod pallets when they are delivered?
NO! DO NOT water the sod rolls while they are on the pallets; they’ll overheat and die.
Wait until the sod rolls are laid before watering them. Also, DO NOT wait until the sun sets to water. Water the sod right away! Ignore the whole “waterdrops acting as magnifying glasses under the sun” urban legend!
Make sure to have lots of watering cans at hand. Consider also asking your neighbours whether you can use their watering hoses.
Should I water the sod rolls while I lay them?
Feel like you’re down South with a mojito in hand? Is the weather forecast calling for tropical temps? Here’s a little exotic advice for you! Water your soil a little (little) bit before laying your new sod rolls. Why do you ask? Because it’ll keep the roots from burning! But be careful. Water just a little! Basically, you’re trying to lower the soil’s temperature. You want to avoid wetting it to the point of compacting it, which would prevent the roots from penetrating the soil.
In Cancùn-like weather, we also suggest you water as soon as you’ve laid a small section of grass. Don’t wait until you’re finished laying all the sod rolls.
So, break out your – and even your neighbours' – watering cans and water your grass for 10 to 14 days until the first inch of soil is wet. Glug, glug, glug. Remember, grass drinks through its roots!
How do I lay my grass?
With the help of your friends, backed up by pizza and beer, of course!
Laying sod is easy peasy! You’ve got this!
- Lay the first row of sod rolls in a straight line.
- Place the second row of sod rolls next to the first. D’oh!
- BUT… and this is super important… you MUST lay the sod in staggered rows. What does that mean? It means you need to lay the sod rolls like bricks in a brick wall!
Note #1: If your property has a slight slope, lay the sod rolls perpendicular to the slope from the bottom to the top.
For more details, consult Gazon Québec’s complete and friendly guide, created just for you! <3 Check out our successful installation and set-up and professional maintenance tips.
Note #2: If you don't want to get your hands dirty... we get it. That’s why we also offer grass laying/installation services! YAY!
How long does it take to lay a pallet of sod rolls?
Typically, a person can lay one pallet of sod rolls (740 ft2) in one hour.
So, call your friends, order some pizza, and get it laid as fast as possible!
Why? Because grass is a living plant that needs to be planted in the ground and watered right away!
Oh, and our team of installers are inspired by Speedy Gonzales! Our speedy team can lay six pallets (4400 ft2) an hour! W00t! W00t!
Do I need to rent equipment to lay my sod?
Nope! Once the ground is ready, all you’ll need to do is roll up your sleeves and get to work laying sod rolls.
Do you provide sod laying (installation) services?
Yes, absolutely! Our Speedy Gonzales-inspired team can lay your sod fast. Are you ready to see your property turn green in a flash?
Visit a grass variety page to get a quote and find out the sod laying/installation price for your quantity.
How much does a sod roll weigh?
Rolls weigh 20 to 50 lbs. Big variation, right!? The weight varies depending on whether the sod got wet in recent days.
Note #1: There are 74 rolls per pallet, so a pallet weighs 1480 to 3700 lbs.
Note #2: The sod thatch is about one inch thick.
How many rolls are there on each pallet?
74 rolls, for a total of 740 ft2
Where does the sod come from? Who produces it?
We work in partnership with several Quebec sod farms that provide us with the best pure local sod! :)/p>
Is the grass freshly harvested?
YES! Great news, right? YAY!
You can even boast that it’s the “daily catch”! Yummy!
But, yo… don't forget that you must lay it as soon as you get it, because grass is a plant that needs to be planted in the ground. Full stop. Got it?
What guarantee do you offer?
We guarantee that all our products are MATURE, in PERFECT HEALTH, perfectly FRESH and will survive TRANSPLANTATION.
Because millions of “undesirable” plant seeds are always present in your soil (existing and/or transient), they are in a state of dormancy, ready to germinate under certain favourable conditions, including a decrease in the competitiveness of our grass due to lacklustre post-delivery maintenance regime, Gazon Québec cannot be held responsible for “undesirable weeds” that appear.
Gazon Québec cannot be held responsible for any overwintering damage. The quality of our products greatly exceeds the B.N.Q. #NQ0605-300 standard. The hardiness of our products is based on our experience and that of accredited research centres.
Our products should be used normally and should receive at least five hours of sunlight a day.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Because grass is a living, highly perishable plant, the following conditions apply:
All claims* must be made within 48 hours of sod roll delivery and be sent by email.
The products must be installed within the first few minutes of receipt. Our professional suppliers harvest on average four hours before shipment, excluding overnight hours (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.).
The products must be irrigated abundantly and quickly from the first 1000 ft2 installed. Be aware that 99.99% of the risk of transplant failure is related to insufficient irrigation, especially watering delay after installation.
Can all grass types tolerate trampling?
In contrast to some seed mixtures, all our grass varieties are mature and trample resistant.
Note: FYI, our toughest grass is Green with Envy Grass. ;)
How do you maintain the best-looking lawn in the neighbourhood?
Discover our tips on how to be your neighbourhood’s grass master!
- Apply our 5-Star Seasonal Steroid fertilizer every three to four weeks from April to October.
Note #1: Stop right there! You gotta be careful with fertilizer! Don’t apply it willy-nilly when the weather gets tropical. When the mercury hits 25°C and over, just say NO to fertilizer! Otherwise, your lawn will burn! :( Also, remember to follow the manufacturer's dosage recommendations. :)
- When the weather is Cancùn-like, cut your grass no shorter than three inches! Otherwise, it will weaken under the sun and thin out. And you really don’t want that to happen!
- In the fall, cut your lawn to two inches, and it will make a strong comeback in the spring! YAY!
- Don't cut more than 1/3 of the height of your lawn at each mowing! So, if you let your grass grow tall, and it is now six inches long, don't mow it any shorter than four inches. Otherwise, it will get stressed out and weaken, weeds will proliferate, and insects will have a field day.
- Wait until your grass is dry before mowing it.
- Sharpen your mower’s blades after every eight hours of mowing.
Note #2: The more you take care of your lawn, the fewer weeds you’ll have. Why? Because when grass is strong, it doesn't leave any room for weeds to grow. TA-DA! Magic!
Can I walk on my grass after it’s been laid?
When you choose sod rolls, you can enjoy your lawn quickly! As soon as it's planted, you can walk on it, and within three weeks, you can jump, do cartwheels, and even run around on it! YAY!
How, when, and how often should I fertilize my lawn?
Like all plants, grass needs a variety of nutrients to grow and be healthy. We recommend that you apply our 5-Star Seasonal Steroid fertilizer every three to four weeks from April to October to keep it strong!
Note: Stop right there! You gotta be careful with fertilizer! Don’t apply it willy-nilly when the weather gets tropical. When the mercury hits 25°C and over, just say NO to fertilizer! Otherwise, your lawn will burn! :(
Also, remember to follow the manufacturer's dosage recommendations. :)
Check out our additional tips in our Tips for Newbies guide, such as how tall to keep your grass in summer vs. the fall or how to make your lawn more drought resistant, among other things.
Is your curiosity piqued? Check out the guide; you’ll even learn how to keep weeds to a minimum naturally! ;)
Bottom line: If you treat your lawn right and with the utmost care, it’ll be happy and healthy!
How tall should I keep my grass?
Reality check. Cutting your grass very short won’t turn your lawn into a golf course. Just say NO!
Here’s an ideal height mowing guide:
First mowing after installation: 4 to 5 inches
Spring: 2 inches
Late spring and summer: 3 to 4 inches
Autumn: 2 inches
Note #1: If the weather is Cancùn-like, with the thermometer hitting 25°C or more, droughts, and heatwaves: FULL STOP! Do NOT mow your grass!
Note #2: Don't cut more than 1/3 of the height of your lawn at each mowing! So, if you let your grass grow tall, and it is now six inches long, don't mow it any shorter than four inches. Otherwise, it will get stressed out and weaken, weeds will proliferate, and insects will have a field day.
Note #3: Wait until your grass is dry before mowing it.
Note #4: Sharpen your mower’s blades after every eight hours of mowing.
How can I cut my grass less often?
TA-DA! Three tips to make the most of your life instead of mowing your grass:
- Cut your lawn to three or four inches.
By keeping it at this height, you’ll need to cut it 50% less often! YAY!
- Apply our 5-Star Seasonal Steroid fertilizer once a year at about the end of June.
Basically, you should apply the fertilizer after the growth spurt, rather than before or during the growth spurt. This application will promote root growth and limit the rate of foliage growth. YAY!
Isn't that awesome!
Can mowing height help save water?
Yes, definitely!
Mowing your grass to three inches during the summer helps it retain moisture, so it won't be as thirsty! YAY!
Moreover, by keeping grass long, the sun dries out the soil less, which saves even more water! YAY!
Gazon Québec wants to make sure there’s water left for little fishies; that’s why it has magically created a type of grass that needs less water!

Funny fact: Our Non-Yellowing Grass saves six toilet flushes per day! You save over 2000 flushes of drinking water per year! #fishfriendly
Do I need to water my lawn?
YES…. and NO. Not a very clear-cut answer, right?
Here’s the deal. When your new sod is freshly laid, you must water it. That's 100% non-negotiable; don’t even try to avoid this step! ;)
Normally, in Quebec, it rains enough for grass to stay healthy. HOWEVER, we’re seeing more and more heatwaves and droughts. So, even if you don't have a green thumb... sometimes you do need to give it a helping hand. ;)
So, keep your eyes peeled in July and August to see whether your grass needs to be watered.
Click here to learn more about Non-Yellowing Grass. It’s simply an epic choice, especially considering Quebec’s changing climate.
What should I do during an extended dry spell/drought?
During an extended heatwave or drought, grass goes dormant.
Wondering what grass dormancy actually means?
Basically, to survive, grass sets aside all nutrients and water for its roots. To this end, it will sacrifice its blades. Your grass may turn yellow, but at least it will stay alive thanks to its roots! YAY!
Note #1: If your sod has decided to take a nap, zzzzzzz, DON’T mow or fertilize it. Leave it alone until it wakes up on its own!
Note #2: Dormant grass is more susceptible to insects, disease, and trampling. So, pamper it a bit when it wakes up!
When’s the best time to water my lawn?
First, let's debunk the biggest grass watering myth! It’s FALSE that water droplets act like magnifying glasses under the sun and burn your grass! This has never been proven! And while it could potentially create a minor “injury” to grass blades, a lack of water to the roots could kill your grass altogether. Sooooooo... watering is a no-brainer!
Second, if you’ve laid your new sod, get serious about watering right away and continue to do so for 10 to 14 days so that one inch of soil under the sod roll is wet. Grass is a plant, and a plant drinks through its roots, so the water has to get to them!
Normally, in Quebec, it rains enough that we don’t need to water our lawns. But, as you know, it's getting hotter... so here's what we recommend:
- Water in the morning!
Why? Because you’ll waste less water, and we want to conserve water for the little fishies! ;) What’s more, the grass blades will have time to dry which will cut down on the risk of some fungal diseases (yeah, ‘shrooms!).
- Water when it's cloudy!
Same principle, the water will have time to be absorbed by the strands instead of evaporating.
Note #1: Avoid watering at midday. Why? Same old reason: Too much evaporation, so less water gets to the roots.
Note #2: Check your local bylaws (Pssst, most cities have flexible bylaws that apply to freshly laid sod;)
Where do weeds come from, and what should I do if there are weeds on my lawn?
Most weeds have two evil superpowers. Mwahaha!
- They can almost teleport! Yep, you read that correctly! Some weed seeds can travel up to several kilometres before landing on your lawn. They are helped by their sidekicks: birds, wind, and animals!
- They can also hibernate for decades before germinating. :O
But despite their superpowers, weeds cannot defeat well fertilized, frequently moved, and well irrigated grass. Your grass can fight back and be a tough opponent!
Bottom line: When grass is dense and healthy, weed infiltration is much more difficult! YAY!
What should I do if mushrooms are growing on my lawn?
If fungi grow on your new lawn because you’ve watered it, we'll almost be proud of you ;)
If you’ve got ‘shrooms, that means you’ve done your job right. Since the soil has been wet for 2-3 weeks, it’s normal for fungi to pop up on your lawn. Don't worry. Once conditions are drier and you’ve mowed your new lawn, these mushrooms will disappear.
What should I do if I suspect my lawn has a (fungal) disease?
If you’re not sure, it’s best to consult a professional at a garden centre close to you.
FYI, “rust” mushrooms or white or circle-shaped fungi are rarely bad. More often than not, they’ll go away as quickly as they appeared! ;)
Remember, the best way to fight fungi is to maintain your lawn well (i.e. fertilization, mowing and watering). A healthy lawn is a strong lawn! YAY!
What should I do if I suspect insects have invaded my lawn?
While white grubs are the most common issue, unfortunately, many other problematic bugs exist, including grass bugs, moths, crane flies and so forth.
Consult an expert at your local garden centre to identify the insect to nip your entomic problem.
Psst, entomic means “related to insects”.
The more you know, right?!
Note: Once your grub problem is solved, we suggest you choose a type of grass that contains fescue; grubs like to nosh on Kentucky bluegrass more!
Click here for our Partial Shade Grass. Psst, it contains fescue! ;)
What to do about grubs?
What the bleep are these things? Grubs are beetle larva. These worms feed on grass roots. In large quantities, it can do a great deal of damage to your lawn.
Consult an expert at your local garden centre to choose the right product to get rid of them.
Wondering why you have grubs? Here are some conditions that favour their presence: a lawn that is mowed too short, a lawn weakened by drought, a lawn with a mineral deficiency (lack of phosphorus or boron), a lawn that’s too close to light sources and/or a lawn on a sloping or very sunny property.
Note #1: Here’s our top tip to avoid grubs: Turn off your outdoor lights during their breeding season, from mid-June to mid-July.
Note #2: Once your grub problem is solved, we suggest you choose a type of grass that contains fescue; grubs are fonder of Kentucky bluegrass!
Click here for our Partial Shade Grass. Psst, it contains fescue! ;)
I have ants on my lawn; what can I do?
Ants have moved onto your lawn, and wondering if that’s a problem?
In fact, it’s not an issue, and there’s no need to worry!
Apart from the fact that you may not find their presence attractive, it's not harmful.
Play hide and seek with the anthills. How? Simply keep your grass longer! That way, you'll win every time! ;)
Is it true that a lawn acts as an oxygen factory, an air conditioner, and a dust cover?
TRUE! And it does much more than that!
Check out the following!
An acre of grass produces 3.5x more oxygen than an acre of trees! Crazy, right!?
A lawn acts as a natural air conditioner! How? A lawn lowers the soil temperature through plant transpiration! Yep, no joke! It delivers a reduction of 31°C compared to asphalt and 20°C compared to bare soil.
Do you have allergies? Well, guess what? Grass is your ally! Yep, you heard right! It traps dust and pollutants! YAY!
Does grass have any other cool features? Indeed, it does!
Grass protects against erosion, preserves water quality, improves soil quality, reduces noise propagation and is safe for outdoor activities and sports, among other things. But let's stop there; otherwise, we'll start writing a love letter to grass!
Is having a lawn bad for the environment?
NOPE! A well-managed lawn will NOT have a negative impact on the environment. On the contrary, it will enrich the soil with organic matter and stimulate microbial life, as well as improve its structure and fertility. Cool, right!?
Also, a lawn cuts down on soil erosion and limits pollution. WIN-WIN. YAY!
What's more, the sod farms that supply us make sure that their production is always done in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. We’ve selected our partners wisely! That’s part of our promise.
What do I do with the empty pallets or any extra sod?
No product return is available. You could sell the pallets on Marketplace, make a Pinterest DYI project with them, or have a bonfire! Make your neighbours happy by giving them any extra sod rolls.
